Lighting. If not using LED technology, never leave your home or go to bed without first turning off your lights. For outdoor lighting, make certain extension cords are rated for outdoor use, and always use GFCIs.
Decorations. Give all your holiday decorations a once-over look when unpacking each year to make certain there are no loose connections or nicks that could potentially cause shock or worse a fire. Decor instructions may provide information about amperage requirements to help prevent you from overloading circuits. Also, keep decorations at least three feet away from heat sources, especially those with an open flame such as candles and fire places.
Live Tree. Make certain to water and keep fresh to reduce the risk of fire. Also, promptly dispose of trees when the holidays are over.
Space Heaters. Remember to turn off space heaters if leaving a room or your home.
